Tanning Tips

Why Use a Lotion?

Lotions are a very important part of the tanning process. Using a tanning lotion helps lock in moisture that is lost during the tanning process. It also helps to smooth out skin and allows for optimum UV absorption. Lotions help you get darker faster and help you keep your tan longer. The skin should be hydrated in order reach and maintain that desired tan. Dry skin reflects UV light and does not allow it to tan underneath. Dry skin also exfoliates faster which in turn causes a tan to fade quicker. We offer the most advanced lotions available including tingle lotions, cooling lotions, bronzers and accelerators.

What is a "TINGLE" Lotion?
A tingle lotion increases the microcirculation of the skin, or causes blood vessels in the skin to open, which increases blood flow. An increase in blood flow also increases the oxygenation of the skin and aids in the delivery of required nutrients. Tingle lotions take the tanner to the next level of darkness. Tanning Cove offers a wide variety of tingles, ranging from mild to very intense tingles. It is not recommended that tanners with sensitive skin use tingle lotions, as they are likely to feel uncomfortable with the reddening of the skin and heating effects.

What is a "COOLING" Lotion?
A cooling lotion is for tanners who want to achieve a deep, dark tan without the actual heat of an indoor tanning bed. Cooling lotions use invigorating, botanical aromas such as Menthol, Eucalyptus Oil, Cucumber and Spearmint Oil to give the skin a clean, refreshing feel. They also help the tanner feel extra cool while tanning. Tanning Cove carries several new, aromatic, cooling lotions that will awaken the senses. There are also cooling lotions that include both the cooling effect and an intense tingle to take tanners to the next level of darkness.

What is a Bronzer?
Bronzers supplement a tan with a light self-tanner that delivers color in 2 to 4 hours while a natural tan develops. The bronze is temporary and can be removed with soap and water as it may contain DHA. DHA is commonly used as a self-tanning agent and causes the surface of the skin to brown. Some bronzers also contain both a temporary bronze tint and DHA. Tanning Cove specializes in the most advanced levels of bronzing lotions to help you achieve that "sun-kissed" look.

What is an Accelerator?
Accelerators are used mainly to prepare the skin for a tanning session. There are a variety of accelerators ranging from non-tingle accelerators, bronzing accelerators and tingle accelerators. Tanning Cove can recommend an accelerator for those tanners wanting to build a strong base tan.

Preparing For Tanning

1. Prepare Your Skin. Before indoor tanning your skin should be clean and free of dead skin build up. You want your skin to get the best tan possible so using a mild soap or body wash is essential. Using a body poof, scrub the body in circular motions.

2. Use A Light Moisturizer
on the skin after shower to keep skin moisture level high, but also keeps skin pores clear.

3. How Long In Tanning Bed. If you are a beginner, we will help you pick a good starting number for tanning. Spending to long in the tanning bed too soon can result in harsh painful burns. Start low and slowly increase to 20 minutes in a conventional tanning bed. If you start to feel any prickling or stinging on your skin, you have over exposure. Stop tanning as soon as you feel this.

4. Tanning Nude, Or Not? Whether you choose tanning nude or not is your choice. Most Tanners prefer tanning nude, no tan lines. All of Tanning Cove's rooms have locks on them . It is a personal preference. If you are using a bronzer tanning lotion, be careful because some may stain clothing.

5. Protect your lips. They do not produce melanin and they will burn easily unless you protect them with lip balm.

6. To avoid getting creases or pressure tanning lines, you should move your limbs into different positions during your session.  For the first half, try laying down with both arms extended above your head and legs apart. For the second half, bring your arms down next to your sides but away from your body, and re-position your legs by raising one knee slightly for a half of the remaining time, and then the other leg do the same thing.

7. Try to avoid wearing make-up, deodorant, or other perfumes prior to tanning. Some of these things can make your skin more sensitive and possibly have a bad reaction with your skin when exposed to UV. If you wear a lot of deodorant, you may notice that you are not tanning as well around your armpits, and you need to remove this prior to tanning.

After Tanning Care

1. Don't Shower Right After Tanning. Your skin is still tanning hours after your tanning bed session. Allow your tan to set in and wait at least 3 to 4 hours. When you do shower, always use a moisturizers to keep skin hydrated

2. Moisturize keep your body moisturized daily
(water based mosturizer)
